5 things you may (or may not) know about the
4th of July
The 4th of July commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 by delegates from the 13 colonies.
Only John Hancock and Charles Thompson, the secretary of the Congress, signed on that date. Everyone else signed on August 2nd, after revisions and a formal copy where made.
The phrase “your John Hancock” arose from this to mean “your signature”, due to the fact that John Hancock made his signature rather large so that the King of England could read it without his glasses!
The 4th of July didn’t become a federal holiday until 1938.
Although this declaration was made, the war continued until 1783 with the help of the Netherlands, Spain and France. The last battle was at Yorktown in 1781, British forces were removed form Savannah and Charleston in 1782 and the war was officially over with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1873.
