Snow, Cold and Ice...

Yes, that’s January in Chicagoland!

This week is definitely, snow, cold and icy! Here are a few things we have been thinking about…

What was the coldest temperature in Chicago?
Answer: Chicago’s all-time record low temperature of -27°F was recorded on January 20, 1985. Des Plaines lowest recorded temperature was -14°F.

What are the best ways to walk on ice?

  • Wear Appropriate Footwear - Use shoes or boots with non-slip rubber soles or textured treads.
  • Take Short, Shuffling Steps - Walk slowly and deliberately keeping your feet close to the ground, almost like a penguin waddle, to maintain balance.
  • Bend Your Knees Slightly- Keep your center of gravity low. Avoid locking your knees; stay flexible and ready to adjust.
  • Keep Your Hands Free - Avoid carrying heavy loads that can throw off your balance. Keep your arms out slightly to your sides for stability.
  • Use the “Penguin Walk” Technique - Point your feet slightly outward. Shift your weight over your front foot before stepping. Avoid walking heel-to-toe; instead, step flat-footed.
  • Avoid Slopes and Smooth Surfaces - Stay on paths that have been treated with salt, sand, or gravel. If unavoidable, step sideways on slopes and use railings or supports.
  • Use Aids - Trekking Poles or Walking Sticks equipped with ice grips can offer extra stability. Handrails: Use them whenever available on stairs or ramps.
  • Stay Alert - Be aware of black ice, which may look like a wet surface but is slippery. Walk on grass or snow patches when possible, as they provide more traction than ice.
  • Fall Safely if Necessary - If you feel yourself falling: Protect Your Head: Tuck your chin and try to roll. Relax Your Body: Tension increases the risk of injury. Fall on Your Side: Spread the impact to reduce injury risk.
  • Check the Weather and Path Conditions- Avoid icy areas when possible. If conditions are severe, consider postponing travel.

How thick does ice need to be on a body of water before you can walk on it?
Answer: 3” for one person on foot, 7.5” for a passenger car

Are all snowflakes shaped like a star?
Answer: No, some are hexagons, and some are even columns or long and thin like a needle.

So, does this mean you have to wait for all this snow, cold, and ice to leave for your move? NO, in fact it could be the best time. Get ahead of that spring rush, less competition now, and really whatever timeframe works for you is best.

Joe & Jean were fortunate to experience this ballet at Chicago’s famous the Lyric Opera House, thanks to Jean’s gym buddy who was in the orchestra. This building opened in 1929... that’s 96 years ago.
