Take it or Leave it?

Ok, so it’s time for you or one of your family members to move. Ugh, right? Your mind is racing, what about this or that? Where do I start? Take a breath, we got you with a few suggestions:

Garden plants/Flowers - LEAVE
Regardless of how much work you put into your garden, anything in the ground is considered to be part of the property and must be left behind. (maybe take a cutting or two to regrow at your new place) You can bring your potted plants with you to brighten up your new space!

Outdoor equipment - DEPENDS
Take that beloved grill if it is not a permanent installation. The shred? Swing set? Those are a no since they are attached to the ground and would leave a gaping swath of unwanted dead grass if you did!

Curtains - TAKE
Unless they were specifically made for measurements of your current home, you can take them with you.

Blinds - LEAVE
In contrast, your blinds are technically considered attachments, so they should stay - unless you have otherwise negotiated. This is especially true if they are custom-made and would likely be useless in your new home.

Wall Mounts - LEAVE
Bottom line, you don’t want to leave gaping holes, so if you really need it, have the wall repaired.

Light Fixtures - LEAVE
If prospective buyers see a light fixture such as chandeliers, during the home tour, they would expect them to come with the house unless otherwise stated.

Appliances - DEPENDS
Same idea here, if buyers see them, they expect that they come with the house. Anything attached should stay, or be negotiated with your sale.

Artwork - TAKE
Artwork is very personal, so take it with you. You may want to ask if the new buyers want the nails to stay or go.

Paint Cans - DEPENDS
Leaving them could be considered a goodwill gesture to the new owners – either to know the exact color or do touchups themselves.

Heavy items - DEPENDS
You got it, anything that is not nailed down should stay, unless it is stated in your documents.

Remember, anything is negotiable. When faced with these decisions, just give us a call - 224-650-7748 – maybe the new buyers will want or be willing to pay for something you don’t want to move. Plus, we have trusted junk removal companies who can help as well!
And, there is always the additional garage sale, yard sale, or estate sale to purge yourself of the big and small.
The Spouses Selling Houses Team has seen hundreds of people move, so we do have some experience here… give us a call for ideas, suggestions, or just to vent. We are happy to help!

Thanks to Matthen Brady from Good to be Home Magazine for some of these suggestions.
