5 tips for creating a butterfly-friendly garden

Butterflies bring color and movement while helping with pollination. Whether you have an entire yard or just a balcony to work with, here are 5 things to keep in mind:

Butterfly gardens do not have to be large - containers, hanging pots, and window boxes work too.

Butterflies like the sun - it helps them maintain their body temperature. Morning sun is best.

Butterflies prefer open tube-like flowers with nectar - examples would be Joe-Pye weed, ironweed, coneflowers, goldenrod, or asters.

Butterflies come from caterpillars - include plants that they can feed on like; milkweed, dill, and asters. Interesting fact - Monarch caterpillars only eat milkweed – and the monarch butterfly is known as the “milkweed butterfly”!

Butterflies like fresh water - so a birdbath would be helpful.

Anyone have a butterfly-friendly garden?

If so, send us a picture! We would love to see it.

Good luck,
Joe, Jean, Donna & Jessa
