Why a Bunny and Eggs for Easter?
It’s a special week – it is both the Christian Holy Week and the Jewish Passover. That means the Easter Bunny is coming this Sunday!
That got us thinking… Why a bunny? Why eggs? (since bunnies don’t lay eggs..)
Why a Bunny?
The rabbit, or hare, has long been a symbol of fertility and new life in many ancient cultures due to its prolific breeding.
The modern concept of the Easter Bunny traces back to 17th-century Germany, where tales were told of an “Osterhase” (Easter hare) that laid colored eggs for well-behaved children.
German immigrants brought the tradition to Pennsylvania in the 1700s, where it spread among other communities.
Why Eggs?
Eggs are ancient symbols of rebirth and renewal, which align with both spring and the Christian belief in resurrection.
The combination of eggs and rabbits (two fertility icons) reinforces the theme of new life.
Here is a Bit of Folklore...
According to one particularly wild legend, the goddess Ēostre (a pagan Germanic goddess of spring and fertility) once found a wounded bird and, to save it, turned it into a hare. The twist? The hare retained the ability to lay eggs, but only once a year, in the spring.
Because of this divine weirdness, the hare would lay beautiful, colorful eggs to honor the goddess, and would hide them for children to find as a celebration of life returning to the earth.
Some Germanic stories describe the Easter Bunny as a magical hare so fast and sneaky that no one ever sees it deliver the eggs—kind of like a springtime version of Santa Claus.
